چکیده
Desiccation cracking is a natural phenomenon caused by drying in near-surface earth soils subjected to constrained shrinkage. In this research, the water retention curve of two clayey soils, prepared compaction under standard proctor conditions, are determined study desiccation cracking. Two techniques suction control applied process and reach soils. For values higher than 4 MPa, saline-solution method was used impose variousrelative humidity so, various suctions. addition, osmotic for between 0.5 MPa 2 MPa. Additionally, dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) technique corroborate curves obtained with other techniques. The volume changes also tracked showing significant shrinkage upon drying. To tensile strength soil, Braziliantest performed on samples submitted According results, tested soil plasticity index shows consistently capacity larger Also, exhibit smooth transition when change (at suctions MPa).

Numerical Modeling of Desiccation Cracking in Compacted Soils
Desiccation cracking and its implications will be more of an issue due to the global warming trends. Soils tend to shrink when they lose moisture. In particular, fine-grained soils are susceptible to shrinkage and the resulting volume change. Shrinkage can cause cracking of soils that can adversely impact the engineering properties and behavior of the soils. As a result, the integrity of struct...
متن کاملNumerical study of bending test on compacted clay by Discrete Element Method: tensile strength determination
The study of the tensile behaviour of clay is one of the topics which requires a specific lighting especially when one pays a close attention to the pathology of work built with or on clays subjected to significant tensile forces. Therefore, failure or damage of clay, under specific conditions, can be related to tensile stress limit and not to shear stress limit. It is the case of compacted cla...
متن کاملDesiccation of a clay film: cracking versus peeling.
We report a simulation study on competition between cracking and peeling, in a layer of clay on desiccation and how this is affected by the rate of drying, as well as the roughness of the substrate. The system is based on a simple 2-dimensional spring model. A vertical section through the layer with finite thickness is represented by a rectangular array of nodes connected by linear springs on a...
متن کاملEstimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils
In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...
متن کاملWater flow and salt transport in cracking clay soils of the Imperial Valley, California
The principles of irrigation and drainage in cracking soils differ markedly from non-cracking soils, and are not thoroughly understood. This paper presents a conceptual model to simulate water and salt flows in cracking soils of the Imperial Valley, CA, in the presence of ground water that contributes partially to ET demand of crops. A salt reactivity function is introduced in the model to acco...
